How did the families on this website get selected?
All families were referred to be part of this program through Oakland County Schools. Every family has been given access to this program through a representative who knows their current situation and declared them eligible to receive community assistance.
What happens when I adopt a family?
An email and text notification will be sent to the family you selected notifying them that they have been adopted. Your information will not be shared with them during this initial notification. You will receive contact information for the household once you confirm the adoption. You can reach out and let the household know that you have adopted them, ask any questions, and arrange for delivery directly with the head of household. We recommend not purchasing anything until you have made contact with the head of household to verify.
How can I get gifts to the family?
Households were asked to make wishlists for you to select from. You can use this wishlist as a guide to purchase gifts for the family. You can be as exact to the wishlist as you want, but you are not at all obligated to get all gifts from the wishlist.
You can purchase in person gifts, buy online gift cards, or do both for the family. You can even purchase physical gift cards and drop them off in a mailbox as well. You will receive the delivery address once you confirm your adoption of the family. You need to communicate directly with the head of household to coordinate delivery of physical items.
How do you recommend purchasing online gift cards?
When you adopt a family, you will gain access to their phone number and email address. This will allow you to send online gift cards at retailers of your choice to the family via email. The amount you choose is up to you, but most local adopt a family programs suggest approximately $50-100 per family member.
We ask you to use your discretion when sending one or more gift cards. You can purchase as many gift cards from as many different retailers as you want, but generally, the best and simplest way to ensure people have what they need is to purchase gift cards from major stores like Walmart, Meijer, or Target, as they all sell clothing, toys, kitchen appliances, and more. In addition, Amazon is a great choice as a general gift card choice as well. The choice is up to you in the end, but these are some helpful suggestions to ensure the family you are serving is being served well.
Can I make deliveries after Christmas?
Absolutely. Simply connect with the head of household and make arrangements.
